The Pilgrim’s Plow: Poetry Blog with Preston Atkinson
Posted by Steve Burchett under Writings | Tags: Poetry, Preston Atkinson |Leave a Comment
Preston Atkinson is a pastor in Texas who has become a dear friend to me. I know him because of BJ Maxwell, another dear friend and fellow pastor. Preston and I recently decided to start a blog together that will simply feature the poetry we each write. We are doing this as a way both to encourage one another and perhaps, if God sees fit, to help others who might visit the site. Ultimately, our aim is to glorify our great God.
As you will see, Preston is a much more savvy poet than me. I’m so grateful for that, though, because he is both an inspiration and a teacher. In fact, the first poem I ever wrote (sometime within the past two years), Preston read. The poem was not good, but Preston cheered me on, offering helpful insights but not making me feel like an idiot in the process! Divorce and Remarriage: A Permanence View (The book I recently co-authored)
Posted by Steve Burchett under CCW - General, CFKC - General, Writings | Tags: Book, Divorce and Remarriage: A Permanence View |Leave a Comment
I was one of four men to write a book titled Divorce and Remarriage: A Permanence View (158 pages). I was blessed to get to work with my fellow pastors of Christ Fellowship of Kansas City (www.ChristFellowshipKC.org) over a two year period to develop this book. The reason the
book came about is because we as pastors were studying this issue in order to benefit our church (it was originally going to be a short position paper). Eventually we produced something that we think will help more people than just our local fellowship. We believe the position set forth in the book, if applied, will save marriages. We have already heard several stories about how the Lord has used the book to help struggling and failing marriages.
Perhaps by the title you recognize that this book could be a bit controversial. If you know me, I hope you understand that my desire when studying Scripture is to submit to it, whatever I find. I think we have done that with what we believe the Bible teaches on these issues. Every pastor has to take a position because every pastor, if he is doing what God has called him to do, will have to offer biblical counsel in regards to marrige, divorce, and remarriage. Even the wedding ceremonies a pastor will or will not officiate is affected by what he concludes about the Bible’s teaching on divorce and remarriage. It was vital that we come to some conclusions about these issues. It just so happens that the view we have taken is not the “popular” view, although we have dear brothers and sisters in Christ who take that view and we still love each other!
My hope is that whatever you currently believe, you will take the time to read the book. Each of the authors changed his view as a result of this study. You may, or you may not. Perhaps you already take this view. Whatever the case, Scripture must be our authority and it is worth the time to know what God says about these matters. The first half of the book presents the biblical case for our position, and in the second half we deal with case after case of potential scenarios that you or someone else may have already faced, or will face, and also church-related issues. We seek to apply what Scripture teaches to those different situations and contexts.

Radio Interview on “When Your Preacher is NOT John Piper”
Posted by Steve Burchett under CCW - General, Writings | Tags: Chris Arnzen, John Piper, Radio |Leave a Comment
I had the privilege of being interviewed today by Chris Arnzen on his radio show “Iron Sharpens Iron.” The show was an hour, and we discussed the truths from the article I wrote titled, “When Your Preach is Not John Piper.” I had a really enjoyable time, and sensed that the Lord blessed the broadcast. By the way, if you listen, the interview doesn’t start until about 5 or 6 minutes into the show.

“The Value of Arriving Early to Church Meetings”
Posted by Steve Burchett under CCW - General, Writings | Tags: Local Church, Responsibility |Leave a Comment
Here’s how a new short article I wrote starts:
“If we had left just five minutes earlier, we wouldn’t be in this predicament,” you mutter to yourself, confident that you are going to arrive after the church meeting has started. You feel your heart racing. You dread the attention you are about to bring upon yourself. You think about how you might sneak in the back, but then you remember that the church building’s squeaky door will announce your arrival. Finally, you are in your pew, your heart rate is back to normal, nobody is staring at you anymore, and all is well. Or is it?

We offer enough each month to have a bulletin insert for each Sunday, and we provide these for free online. We only expect that churches will not change the wording and also will include the copyright information at the bottom. Enjoy!

Mean Comments on Blogs and the Death and Resurrection of Christ
Posted by Steve Burchett under Writings | Tags: Blog Comments, Jim Elliff, Resurrection |Leave a Comment
Our church meeting this morning was quite enjoyable–A delicious breakfast, and then a Christ-exalting service in which we rejoiced that “He is risen!” Since we normally meet in the evening, it seems strange to be home and just relaxing, not preparing for an evening gathering. With the “free time,” I decided to go check out a few blogs and see what some friends and others I know are writing about, but then I made the mistake of going into the comments sections of a few of these blogs! In particular, I’m talking about blogs where supposedly Christians are not only writing, but leaving comments. I found myself saying a couple of times, “Wow, that was a very mean thing to say!” or “I can’t believe the author, who wrote such a good article, just responded to that person’s comment with such un-Christlike words.” It’s one thing to speak hard truths, but it crosses the line when you attempt to punch the person in the face in cyber-space!
But consider this: Even if we’ve never responded on a blog with arrogance or a mean spirit, we all have responded to somebody’s face with arrogance and/or a mean spirit.
So, first of all, let us rejoice together today that because Christ is risen, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1), and let us consider Peter’s words, “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness” (1 Peter 2:24).
Second, I hope some of you will read and spread around the following article by Jim Elliff, titled, “Check Your Guns at the Door: Responding Like Christians to Blogs and Web Forums.” This is a simple little article that will help us all consider how we, as Christians, should speak to one another on the internet.
