I was one of four men to write a book titled Divorce and Remarriage: A Permanence View (158 pages). I was blessed to get to work with my fellow pastors of Christ Fellowship of Kansas City (www.ChristFellowshipKC.org) over a two year period to develop this book. The reason the Divorce and Remarriage: A Permanence Viewbook came about is because we as pastors were studying this issue in order to benefit our church (it was originally going to be a short position paper). Eventually we produced something that we think will help more people than just our local fellowship. We believe the position set forth in the book, if applied, will save marriages. We have already heard several stories about how the Lord has used the book to help struggling and failing marriages.

Perhaps by the title you recognize that this book could be a bit controversial. If you know me, I hope you understand that my desire when studying Scripture is to submit to it, whatever I find. I think we have done that with what we believe the Bible teaches on these issues. Every pastor has to take a position because every pastor, if he is doing what God has called him to do, will have to offer biblical counsel in regards to marrige, divorce, and remarriage. Even the wedding ceremonies a pastor will or will not officiate is affected by what he concludes about the Bible’s teaching on divorce and remarriage. It was vital that we come to some conclusions about these issues. It just so happens that the view we have taken is not the “popular” view, although we have dear brothers and sisters in Christ who take that view and we still love each other! :)

My hope is that whatever you currently believe, you will take the time to read the book. Each of the authors changed his view as a result of this study. You may, or you may not. Perhaps you already take this view. Whatever the case, Scripture must be our authority and it is worth the time to know what God says about these matters. The first half of the book presents the biblical case for our position, and in the second half we deal with case after case of potential scenarios that you or someone else may have already faced, or will face, and also church-related issues. We seek to apply what Scripture teaches to those different situations and contexts.

It’s one of the best times of the year for basketball enthusiasts. Soon, the big dance will be upon us. Click the following title of an article I wrote for how we can make this year’s tournament even better:

“Improving March Madness”

Thank you for praying about the youth retreat in Indiana. I sensed the Lord’s blessing, hearing of many teens either experiencing conviction or wrestling with assurance of salvation. I’m praying for true converts. Please join me. I really enjoyed my time with these young people!

I preached twice yesterday for Edgewood Baptist Church, and I think I made some lifelong friends in the process.

Below are a few pictures from the retreat. Perhaps you’ll be able to find my mug in the group of teens!

Interacting with the youth

Interacting with the youth

I will be speaking to anywhere from 150-200 7th-12th graders at a youth retreat in Indiana this week. Specifically, I will be interviewed in one session (testimony, my life, etc.) to let the young people get to know me (I hope I’m not too boring!), and then I will preach once on Thursday night, and twice on Friday. The theme is “Jesus, The Great One,” which is actually quite fitting since so many people have nicknamed President Obama “The Great One.” He is a special individual, for sure, and we should rejoice that certain sinful barriers have been broken down with his presidency, but he is no Jesus.

At the retreat, I will preach Luke 1:31-33, “Defining the Great One,” Luke 23:33-43, “Responding to the Great One,” and Luke 9:26, “The Return of the Great One.” I’m also really looking forward to getting to know and converse with the youth. The retreat ends Saturday morning, and then I will preach two messages for Edgewood Baptist Church on Sunday, where one of my college golf teammates, Andy Lutz, serves as one of the pastors.

Concerning this retreat, I was moved recently by a prayer of one of the men of our church, Rod McDonald. He said something like, “Father, we know that you have given Steve a certain amount of natural ability in speaking, but if that is all that he has when he preaches to those teens in Indiana, he will fail miserably. He needs your presence; he needs your Spirit to accompany him and come powerfully behind the truth that he proclaims.” Amen. Please make that your prayer.

I had the privilege of being interviewed today by Chris Arnzen on his radio show “Iron Sharpens Iron.”  The show was an hour, and we discussed the truths from the article I wrote titled, “When Your Preach is Not John Piper.”  I had a really enjoyable time, and sensed that the Lord blessed the broadcast.  By the way, if you listen, the interview doesn’t start until about 5 or 6 minutes into the show.

Here’s how a new short article I wrote starts:

“If we had left just five minutes earlier, we wouldn’t be in this predicament,” you mutter to yourself, confident that you are going to arrive after the church meeting has started. You feel your heart racing. You dread the attention you are about to bring upon yourself. You think about how you might sneak in the back, but then you remember that the church building’s squeaky door will announce your arrival. Finally, you are in your pew, your heart rate is back to normal, nobody is staring at you anymore, and all is well. Or is it?

You can listen to the MP3 of my interview with Chris Arnzen of “Iron Sharpens Iron” here.  I’ve only spoken to him a few times on the phone, but he’s a really good guy who has an excellent radio show. Be sure to check out his website/blog, www.sharpens.org, keep up with his program, and download past interviews.

This was the first time I’ve ever been interviewed on the radio.  Here are five things I learned:

1.  There is precious little time to say things, and certain thoughts don’t even get completed.  Patty, who majored in broadcasting, will read this and say, “Welcome to radio!”

2.  Related to #1, what takes me five minutes to explain in a teaching or preaching venue has to be narrowed down to just a minute or two on radio. That was difficult (and I’m sure I failed), especially when I heard the music playing indicating a commercial break was coming and I knew I needed to stop talking soon.

3.  Certain questions get asked that are not prepared for, and sometimes at a time that is different than expected. I’m not complaining at all.  It’s just an interesting, and challenging, thing to be hit with something unexpected. I even missed a question Chris asked at the end and he had to say, “Steve, are you there?”

4.  Interviews are humbling. Like after I’ve preached or taught a Bible Study, I’m kicking myself for not saying certain things better or clearer, or not clarifying certain statements. It was a humbling experience, and I’m thankful for that.

5.  I enjoyed being on the radio, and hope to do it again, but I prefer regular preaching and teaching venues.  I guess this wasn’t really something I learned, but I came away especially appreciating guys like Chris Arnzen who are quite gifted to do that kind of show (imagine the vast array of subjects he has to be familiar with!), and remembering that God has made me a preacher.

FYI and FYP (For Your Prayers):  I’ll be on “Iron Sharpens Iron” tomorrow from 2-3 pm central time (3-4 pm eastern time), a radio show in the metropolitan New York City area (1440 AM in NY and CT), and also live on the web (go to http://sharpens.blogspot.com/ and scroll down and look on the right to see how to listen online). The show is hosted by Chris Arnzen, and I’ll be discussing with him “Childhood Conversion: How Children Come to Faith in Christ.”
