Preston Atkinson is a pastor in Texas who has become a dear friend to me. I know him because of BJ Maxwell, another dear friend and fellow pastor. Preston and I recently decided to start a blog together that will simply feature the poetry we each write. We are doing this as a way both to encourage one another and perhaps, if God sees fit, to help others who might visit the site. Ultimately, our aim is to glorify our great God.

As you will see, Preston is a much more savvy poet than me. I’m so grateful for that, though, because he is both an inspiration and a teacher. In fact, the first poem I ever wrote (sometime within the past two years), Preston read. The poem was not good, but Preston cheered me on, offering helpful insights but not making me feel like an idiot in the process! I will be spending just under two weeks in the Philippines in August. I will be the guest of ACTION International Ministries, specifically ACTION Philippines. I will be speaking five times at a pastors’ conference of Filipino pastors (over 200 men, perhaps). These are men who have little to no training. This is a tremendous opportunity. Along with speaking, there will be time for Q & A, counsel, and prayer.

Along with the three day conference, I will also be doing some other preaching. All of the details are not in place, but I just found out today that on my first Sunday there, I will be preaching for Higher Rock church (metro Manila). I am also looking forward to spending time with other ministries ACTION has going over there, especially to the street children (Click here for a collection of photos from the various ministries there).

For a brief explanation of the needs of this country, go to this page, and under “ACTION Videos,” Scroll down and listen to “The Philippines and the Gospel: Jeff Anderon.” To see the ministry to the pastors, and to get an idea of the conference I will be part of, scroll down on that same video section and click “Pastoral Leadership Development.” On the video concerning pastoral development, you will see Doug Nichols, the founder and international director emeritus of ACTION. I met him last year in a conference in California.

Please pray for this trip.

“Your Favorite Famous Preacher” (Article written for www.BulletinInserts.org)

“Laughs for Daddy” (A poem I wrote about Lilly, inspired by Luke 6:21b and Romans 8:15)

His name is Conrad Mbewe, and he is currently visiting Christ Fellowship for a few days of preaching and teaching. You can read his personal blog here, and read about his church in Lusaka, Zambia, here. Below is a taste of his preaching:

1. Patty and I have been attending a foster parenting training class (5 of 9 weeks so far), with the hopes that this will eventually lead to adoption. A one day adoption class will follow.

2. I just got back from attending a great conference in Indiana with my fellow pastors and an intern of our church. See www.firefellowship.org.

3. When I got back, Patty and her mom (who is visiting from New Jersey) had completely arranged the garage. It looks awesome.

4. I’m going to the Philippines in August for a little over a week (more on that in another post), and I was just asked to come to Bartlett, TN (Memphis) in October. I’ll be preaching on Sunday morning at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Lawson, Missouri, in a few weeks.

5. Next week, my church is hosting Conrad Mbewe (whom some have called “The Spurgeon of Africa”). It will be a very, very full three days!

6. Katie finished her first year of school. Patty did a terrific job with her. Katie is reading very well, and seemingly loving it.

7. I’m teaching through Luke in our home congregation. We are finishing up our study of John the Baptist in chapter 3 this Sunday. Personally, I’ve spent hours recently meditating on Colossians, specifically chapter 1.

That’s the title of a new article I wrote. Click here to read it.

I’m hopeful this article from BJ Maxwell gets read by thousands. Seriously, take a few moments out of your day and read it carefully with a desire to act on what you hear, and then pass on the article.

Aunt Vicki sent Katie, Luke, and Lilly a few gifts yesterday. Luke thinks his new flip flops are great, as you can see in the picture below!

Little Reader

I was one of four men to write a book titled Divorce and Remarriage: A Permanence View (158 pages). I was blessed to get to work with my fellow pastors of Christ Fellowship of Kansas City (www.ChristFellowshipKC.org) over a two year period to develop this book. The reason the Divorce and Remarriage: A Permanence Viewbook came about is because we as pastors were studying this issue in order to benefit our church (it was originally going to be a short position paper). Eventually we produced something that we think will help more people than just our local fellowship. We believe the position set forth in the book, if applied, will save marriages. We have already heard several stories about how the Lord has used the book to help struggling and failing marriages.

Perhaps by the title you recognize that this book could be a bit controversial. If you know me, I hope you understand that my desire when studying Scripture is to submit to it, whatever I find. I think we have done that with what we believe the Bible teaches on these issues. Every pastor has to take a position because every pastor, if he is doing what God has called him to do, will have to offer biblical counsel in regards to marrige, divorce, and remarriage. Even the wedding ceremonies a pastor will or will not officiate is affected by what he concludes about the Bible’s teaching on divorce and remarriage. It was vital that we come to some conclusions about these issues. It just so happens that the view we have taken is not the “popular” view, although we have dear brothers and sisters in Christ who take that view and we still love each other! :)

My hope is that whatever you currently believe, you will take the time to read the book. Each of the authors changed his view as a result of this study. You may, or you may not. Perhaps you already take this view. Whatever the case, Scripture must be our authority and it is worth the time to know what God says about these matters. The first half of the book presents the biblical case for our position, and in the second half we deal with case after case of potential scenarios that you or someone else may have already faced, or will face, and also church-related issues. We seek to apply what Scripture teaches to those different situations and contexts.

It’s one of the best times of the year for basketball enthusiasts. Soon, the big dance will be upon us. Click the following title of an article I wrote for how we can make this year’s tournament even better:

“Improving March Madness”

I walked the students through Luke 19:1-10 (Jesus and Zaccheus).

Here are a few questions the students asked:

  1. “Isn’t that hypocritical of the people to grumble about Jesus spending time with a ’sinner?’”
  2. “Do you constantly feel like you are a Christian if you are a Christian?”
  3. “What should I do if I’m not sure if I’m a follower of Jesus?”

The Lord seemed to be present and helping tremendously. He seems to be doing some great things in the lives of several students.

A few weeks ago, I was the guest speaker at a youth retreat in Indiana, hosted by Edgewood Baptist Church. There were about 100 teens there, plus 25 adults or so. The theme was “Jesus, the Great One.” Below are the MP3’s of my messages.

Luke 23:33-43, “Responding to the Great One” – Download here

Luke 9:26, “The Return of the Great One” – Download here

The past two weeks at the Park U. Bible study have been especially encouraging. Man-made paradigms and ideas about both Jesus and faith have been confronted especially in the lives of a couple of young ladies. Also, a student from China is hearing the gospel perhaps for the first time. She is eager to hear the truth! Keep praying.

Dr. James M. Grier is the distinguished professor of philosophical theology at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary, a former Cedarville University professor, a gentlemen whom I remember preaching at chapel when I was at Cedarville, and a friend of mine (if one breakfast at a conference makes two people friends!). I have a deep respect for Dr. Grier. Every time I have heard him teach, I have been helped. Since he has spent much of his life in the field of bioethics, I thought I would ask him for recommendations concerning “end-of-life” issues. He was kind enough to send me the following biography that covers far more than I even asked for! He sent it to me in a different format, but transferring it from WORD to WordPress, and keeping the formatting, was difficult. Please notice that the books listed in red Dr. Grier considers to be the best. Be sure to visit Dr. Grier’s website, and in particular his lectures page where you will find an MP3 of a lecture titled “Bio-Ethics: Death, Dying & Euthanasia.” Thank you Dr. Grier!
